Dr. Sarah Low has been involved in the horse industry for over 30 years: first as an amateur rider, next as a professional horse trainer and riding instructor, now as a veterinarian. Dr. Low first learned positive reinforcement techniques and basics of animal behavior as an undergraduate while training rats in a neuroscience laboratory and while while working with African grey parrots under the supervision of Dr. Irene Pepperberg. Prior to Veterinary School, Dr. Low spent time starting colts under saddle and discovered her passion for equine behavior and welfare following a year spent trapping and handling feral horses in Hawaii. After graduating from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2015, she was awarded a research training fellowship from the Havemeyer Foundation at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center with Dr. Sue McDonell to study equine behavior and welfare. Dr. Low has a particular interest in management of feral horse populations including improving handling techniques and welfare for feral horses such as the BLM mustangs.
